Welcome to Year 3

Image result for notesYear 3 is an exciting year for the children as they move into Key Stage 2.  We encourage a little more independence from them, including managing what they bring to school and take home in their bags each day.  This will include snack money if required, letters home, reading books and homework.  Most children need a little support with this in the beginning, so it can be a good idea to check with them each day what they have in their bag.  Don't forget the class has a new Facebook page which will have reminders and information.  Please contact me if you would like to sign up.
owl on books.pngPlease ensure the children have their reading books, along with their reading records,  in school everyday.  We start each day with a little quiet reading time and it allows us to be flexible when we hear individual readers.

Please encourage your child to read to you at home as often as possible.  The more they read the faster they will improve and become confident readers.
  • Homework in year 3 includes weekly spellings; a times table to practise and a piece of Maths homework based on what we have been learning that week.
  • Homework is given out on a Thursday in Homework folders, to be returned the following Tuesday.
  • Spellings will be tested on a Tuesday.
  • Times Tables will be tested on a Wednesday.

Our class text this half term is
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone
by J.K. Rowling.

This magical story will hopefully inspire some great literacy work as well as fuel ideas for our topic.

Our class residential trip to Burwardsley will also be a focus for our literacy, including:
  • Acrostic Poems of Burwardsley
  • Thank you letters to the Burwardsley Centre staff
  • Campfire Poems
  • Recounts of our experiences

The expectation at the end of year 3 is that children will know their 3,4 and 8 times table, as well as their 2, 5 and 10 learnt in year 2.

The Hit the button website is one of many games we play in class to help practise times tables.
